Urban Farm Tour with Building Roots at Ashbridge Estate

Enjoy a guided tour of The Building Roots — a volunteer-powered urban farm located in the northwest portion of Ashbridge Estate. Explore the plot and learn why it chose to emphasize heirlooms, cuisine-specific produce, herbs not easily available, as well as tropical produce, including turmeric, lemongrass, and pepper plants. Plus, discover how to start urban farming on even the smallest plot of land, where to plant seeds and starter plants for maximum growth, and much more.

The farm has a three-pronged mission: to grow for the Building Roots Pay What You Can Moss Park Market, build community, and raise food awareness.

Paired with the film “In My Backyard”:
"In My Backyard" chronicles director Jamie Day Fleck’s personal journey into backyard vegetable gardening converting her entire suburban backyard into a kitchen garden. Using her personal story as a jumping-off point, she branches out to look at the various solutions that backyard gardeners and urban growers have dreamed up and implemented in her city — Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

After the opening night screening of “Local Shorts”, join Patty vs Patty director Chris Strikes and gourmet patty chef Opal Rowe as they reflect upon the patty wars and the effect that Jamaican cuisine has had upon Toronto.

CBC Gem documentary Patty VS Patty details the story of Toronto’s bizarre 1985 “patty wars,” when Jamaican-Canadian bakers went head-to-head with the federal government over the name of their beloved beef patty. This talk sits down with Patty VS Patty director Chris Strikes and gourmet patty chef Opal Rowe of Stush Patties, to reflect upon the patty wars and the effect that Jamaican cuisine has had upon Toronto, along with the owners of Randy’s Patties, the legendary Little Jamaican patty spot that infamously closed up this year, even attracting the attention of Drake who offered to buy out the establishment.

Paired with the film “One Pint at a Time”:
Craft beer generates tens of billions of dollars annually for the US economy. Despite beer’s Egyptian and African heritage, these traditions have been mostly forgotten and are rarely found in American brewing culture. Today, Black-owned breweries make up less than 1% of the nearly 9,000 breweries in operation. Eager to shift the historical perception of who makes and drinks beer, Black brewers, brand owners and influencers across the country are reshaping the craft beer industry and the future of America’s favorite adult beverage.
